Bandcamp Friday on October 4

New release: Dream Inside a Dream

Hello everybody, I hope you are all well.

Tomorrow (October 4, 2024) is the next Bandcamp Friday, which you probably know is a day where the proceeds of all sales go to the artist without any fees deducted. So if you are inclined to but something, tomorrow would be a good day to do it.

Since the last Bandcamp Friday, I have a new release on the Post-Orientalism label called “Dream Inside a Dream”, or “Variations on Three Chords by La Monte Young”. It is a deep drone piece — literally, as it has some quite low frequencies. If you have a stereo with a subwoofer, that is the ideal way to listen to this music. From the liner notes:

The piece consists of five cycles through a six-octave arpeggio formed by stacking the Opening, Magic, and Gamelan chords from the Well-Tuned Piano, and employs the just intonation tuning Young devised for his piece. The original chords are never heard literally.

The sound design expands each individual chord tone into a harmonic aggregate consisting of two to eleven tones by applying various mathematical operations based on the ratio between the note and the implied B-flat tonic.

The aggregates get gradually denser in each successive cycle. At the end, the underlying tonic is finally heard.

I am very happy with how this came out, and I hope that you enjoy it, whether you stream it or buy it. But if you stream, please don’t listen to it on laptop or phone speakers, use good headphones at least.

Best wishes,
Dave
